Companion Home Care Visits Roanoke's Historic Grandin Theater
At Companion Home Care, we believe in helping our senior home care clients stay as active as possible, especially clients who are living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This is crucial for helping our clients stay mentally sharp, engaged, and leading a happy life.
One of the ways we accomplish this is by going on fun outings in our local community. Recently, Companion Home Care owner Michelle Belton brought her client Chris Lemon to see a movie at the Grandin Theater, located at 1310 Grandin Rd in the historic Grandin Village neighborhood of south Roanoke.
The Grandin Theater was built in 1932 and was the first theater in Roanoke to have “talking pictures”. The first movie ever shown at The Grandin was the 1931 film “Arrowsmith”, based on the Sinclair Lewis novel of the same name. At that time, tickets at The Grandin Theater were just $0.25 for adults and $0.10 for children.
Over the years, The Grandin Theater has played host to some of the most famous artists and celebrities in America including Ray Charles, Bill Murray, John Lee Hooker, and BB King. Scenes from the 1989 Dudley Moore film “Crazy People” are set at The Grandin.
“It’s a blessing to have a such a beautiful and historic movie theater like The Grandin right here in our neighborhood. My client, Christopher, and I had a wonderful time at the movies,” said Belton.
When asked which movie they saw Belton replied, “A film called ‘What They Had’, and Christopher dissected every scene for me!”
