Honoring the Life of Shirley Stanton: A Beloved Client and Friend

At Companion Home Care, we have the privilege of working with many incredible people and their families during some of the most challenging times of their lives. One such special person was Shirley Stanton, who passed away on October 8, 2024, after bravely battling cancer. Shirley left a lasting impact on our team, and we were honored to care for her in her final days.

Shirley was born in Christiansburg, VA, on July 31, 1942, and spent her life as a dedicated employee at Norfolk & Western Railroad and later Norfolk Southern Railway, retiring after 37 years of service. A true adventurer at heart, Shirley loved to travel, often with her sister Velma, who preceded her in death. Shirley’s love of life and spirit of exploration were just a few of the qualities that endeared her to so many, including the team at Companion Home Care.

During the last chapter of her life, our owner, Michelle Belton, along with caregivers Sondra and Kristin, had the opportunity to provide Shirley with compassionate care. We spent many hours by her side, coming to appreciate her warmth, strength, and wonderful sense of humor. Shirley was more than just a client to us—she became a dear friend, and her absence will be felt deeply.

Shirley's love for animals, particularly her fondness for cats, and her generous spirit shined through even at the end. She was a strong supporter of charities such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, ASPCA of Southwest Virginia, and Angels of Assisi, a local no-kill animal shelter. We encourage those who wish to honor her memory to consider donating to these causes that were close to her heart.

As Shirley requested, no formal services will be held, but she wished for her friends and loved ones to take a moment, say a prayer, and raise a toast in her memory. Shirley, we will miss you dearly, and we will forever be grateful for the time we had with you.

From everyone at Companion Home Care, our deepest condolences go out to Shirley’s family and friends, especially her niece, nephews, and all who knew and loved her.

Rest in peace, Shirley. You will always hold a special place in our hearts.
