Companion Home Care Attends "Aging in America" Conference Hosted by American Society on Aging
Over 3,000 attendees from across the nation and abroad attend the annual ASA Aging in America Conference to learn, network and participate in the largest multidisciplinary conference covering issues of aging and quality of life for older adults.
The 2019 Aging in America conference was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown New Orleans. Speakers included leading figures from the private, public, scientific, and academic communities.
Companion Home Care Inc owner and Certified Dementia Practitioner Michelle L. Belton of Roanoke, VA attended this year’s event to participate in workshops, seminars, classes, and exhibits that cover various issues seniors face while aging.
One presentation she particularly enjoyed was entitled “Shaping the Future of Falls Management”.
“In that one we discussed the cutting-edge technology that can now be used to monitor and register falls in senior care facilities using motion-sensor cameras. Then staff can be alerted to a fall victim who needs medical attention. I’m excited to think about how this technology can be used in senior home care as well,” said Belton.
Another area of discussion that Belton found interesting was the use of medical marijuana for treating pain in seniors and the elderly.
“Many of my elderly clients take prescription opioids for pain. Opioids have a lot of adverse side effects on cognition, stability, and organs with long-term use. The medical marijuana presentation explained how effective medical marijuana, usually in prescription pill form, has been for patients, and how it can be used to effectively ween seniors off of their opioid medications,” stated Belton.
Belton was invited on-stage at the conference where she lead a discussion and took questions regarding the challenges of opening and running a home care business while providing the best possible care for clients.
“I’m very excited to have learned all this new info and to have connected with so many amazing people who share my passion for caring for seniors. I look forward to sharing this new info with the Companion Home Care staff,” added Belton.
