Companion Home Care Inc attends World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Fourth Global Summit in Washington, DC
The United Nations has designated June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which aims to focus global attention on the problem of physical, financial, and emotional abuse of elders and seniors.
According to the United Nations website, elder abuse "is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world, and an issue which deserves the attention of the international community."
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day's Fourth Global Summit was held on June 15, 2018, in Washington, DC, and Roanoke residents Michelle Belton and Melissa Anderson were in attendance. Michelle Belton, a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) and Certified Alzheimer Educator (CAEd), is the owner of Companion Home Care Inc, a Roanoke-based provider of senior home care services which specializes in home care for seniors with Alzheimer's Disease and dementia.
Melissa Anderson, a former Marine, joined Companion Home Care Inc as a senior caregiver in 2017 and was quickly promoted to Office Manager of Companion Home Care Inc's downtown Roanoke headquarters.
Anderson and Belton attended the event, held at the Securities and Exchange Commission building, in order to educate themselves on the latest advances in combating elder abuse, as well as to join the discussion with their own insights from their 20+ years of experience in senior home care.
"Elder abuse is a serious problem, and we as home care providers are right on the front lines of it. I was elated to see such a diverse group people, not from just our country but from all over the world, come together to find solutions to these issues," said Ms. Belton.
